ASSEMBLYMAN SCHMITT HONORS SALUTE TO FIRST RESPONDERS TOWN OF WAWAYANDA NOMINEE HALSEY DECKER, JR.
Assemblyman Colin Schmitt (R,C,I-New Windsor) held his inaugural 99th Assembly District Salute to First Responders event at the Orange County Emergency Services Center on September 16, 2019. This official State Assembly government event was created to recognize first responders from across the Assembly District who have made significant contributions to their communities and the 99th Assembly District.
The Town of Wawayanda nominated Halsey Decker, Jr. for dedicating his entire adult life to the Fire Services in the Town that he still lives in Slate Hill. Halsey joined the Wawayanda Volunteer Fire Department in 1964. He currently continues as an active member of the department, after 55 years. His father, Halsey R. Decker, Sr. was a founding member of that department and was a past fire chief as well. After following in his father’s footsteps and joining the Wawayanda Volunteer Fire Department, Halsey went up the ranks from Lieutenant, 2nd Assistant Chief, 1st Assistant Chief, and became Fire Chief, serving as Chief for 13 years.
In 1993 Chief Decker became the Orange County Deputy Fire Coordinator- Car 17 and has served in this role for the past 26 years. He was the Commissioner of the Slate Hill Fire District, is an active member of the NYS Fireman’s Association, Past President of the Orange County Fire Chiefs Association. Halsey is a member of the Hudson Valley Fireman’s Association, Orange County Volunteer Fireman’s Association and the Middletown Veteran’s Fireman’s Association. He has been the town of Wawayanda’s 911 Numbering Coordinator since 1990.

Halsey Decker, Jr. Wawayanda Fire Company stated, “I am proud to have followed my father’s footsteps into a life of public service in the Wawayanda Fire Company. It has been a great honor to serve the community and I’d like to express many thanks to Assemblyman Schmitt for honoring me during his Salute to First Responders event.”
Colin Schmitt is committed to public service. Colin is a member of the U.S. Army National Guard and Assemblyman for the 99th NYS Assembly District which includes the Town of Stony Point in Rockland and The Towns of Wawayanda, Goshen, Hamptonburgh, Chester, Blooming Grove, New Windsor, Cornwall, Highlands and Woodbury. Colin lives in the Town of New Windsor with his wife Nikki and their beloved adopted Catahoula puppy Quincy!
