Assemblyman Colin J. Schmitt (R,C,I,LBT,SAM- New Windsor) today slammed the partisan passage of A.8280 the “Automatic voter fraud bill” which would authorize automatic voter registration in New York with no checks against non-citizens and illegal aliens registering to vote and create an exemption from criminal liability for those who illegally register to vote or vote.

Assemblyman Schmitt and Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis (R,C,I,Ref-Brooklyn) had previously successfully blocked this legislation from passing last legislative session upon discovery of wording that required non-citizens and illegal aliens to NOT check the registration opt-out box created by the bill.

The bill now says non-citizens and illegal aliens must opt-out from being automatically registered to vote but eliminates all criminal penalties for illegally registering to vote, attempting to vote or voting.

Assemblyman Colin J. Schmitt stated, “The partisan automatic voter fraud bill endangers the entire electoral process in New York. Any person who interacts with cherry picked state agencies will be automatically registered to vote unless they specifically opt-out. This includes non-citizens and illegal aliens who will be exempted from criminal penalties for illegally registering to vote, attempting to vote or voting. I stood up and strongly opposed this legislation during legislative session which included debate revelations that no additional verification protections were in place to prevent non-citizens from registering to vote and the fact that all veterans, outdoorsmen and local non-NYC town agencies and paperwork have been excluded from automatic registration. Regrettably, the integrity of New York elections are now fully compromised.”

Colin Schmitt is committed to public service. Colin is a member of the U.S. Army National Guard and Assemblyman for the 99th NYS Assembly District which includes the Town of Stony Point in Rockland County and The Towns of Wawayanda, Goshen, Hamptonburgh, Chester, Blooming Grove, New Windsor, Cornwall, Highlands and Woodbury in Orange County.
