ASSEMBLYMAN COLIN SCHMITT STATEMENT ON PARTISAN CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT UNDERMINING INDEPENDENT REDISTRICTING IN NY
Assemblyman Colin J. Schmitt (R,C,I,LBT,SAM- New Windsor) today released the following statement regarding partisan passage of A.10839:
“Today the State Senate and Assembly majorities jammed through a constitutional amendment undermining the independent redistricting commission that was overwhelmingly passed by voters in 2014. Leading public interest groups like the League of Women Voters and Citizens Union have called this what it is: a partisan power grab by the Democrat majorities in the state legislature that destroys the independent and bipartisan nature of the commission, as well as limiting the public’s role in this important process. Now that the Democrats have one-party control of state government, they are abandoning good government reform and trying to game the system to their own advantage. This blatant abuse of power clearly demonstrates the need to have elected officials who serve as checks to the powers of the New York City dominated majorities and I will continue to be the voice against their unconstitutional and undemocratic political actions.”
