STATEMENT FROM ASSEMBLYMAN SCHMITT REGARDING SEAN MALONEY HIRING OF ANTI-POLICE EX-GANG MEMBER
Assemblyman Colin J. Schmitt (R,C,I,LBT,SAM-New Windsor) released the following statement following reports that the new senior advisor to Rep. Sean Maloney at the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee is an anti-police ex-gang member who called the Capitol police White Supremacists and believes looting is a necessary form of protest:
“Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney has demonstrated incredibly poor judgment in appointing Dyjuan Tatro to serve as his senior advisor for diversity and inclusion at the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.
“Beyond Mr. Tatro’s violent, gang-related past for which he served a lengthy prison sentence, his public statements labeling Capitol Police officers “white supremacists,” calling the rioting and looting that occurred last summer “a VITAL form of social PROTEST” and equated police reform with reviving Nazism, evidence a clear hostility toward the brave men and women in blue who serve and protect our communities.
“While Congressman Maloney was once considered a moderate, he has become increasingly radicalized, to the point where his views no longer represent the values shared by Hudson Valley residents. While Maloney and his team may argue that Mr. Tatro is “a national leader in the bipartisan movement to reform our criminal justice system,” his disgusting statements are clearly and vehemently opposed by the residents of New York’s 18th Congressional District, who include thousands of men and women who serve or have served in the NYPD.
“The fact of the matter is that nearly 500 NYPD officers were shot, stabbed, struck by motor vehicles, assaulted with rocks, and otherwise injured during last summer’s riots, as they sought to protect others.
“While I certainly support giving a second chance to those who work hard, invest in themselves, and change their lives for the better, these statements and the context in which they were made, call into question both Congressman Maloney’s decision-making and the team he has assembled to advise Democratic Members of Congress.”
